Mrs. LEO J. (Bernis Slaughter) Fite KNICKERBOCKER 1929-1999

Bernis Fite Knickerbocker, daughter of Jessie and Geneva (Moore) Slaughter, was born May 17, 1929 at Merle, WI. She received her education at the Marquette & McGregor Schools. She received nurse's training at the old McGregor Hospital.

Bernis was united in marriage to Jim Fite in 1948. Jim died in June of 1985. She then married Leo John Knickerbocker, Oct. 10, 1986 at Decorah, IA. Leo died April 12, 1993. Bernis retired from the healthcare field after working for 30 years. She enjoyed drawing, painting, doing crafts, attending garage sales, flowers, gardening and ice skating. Bernis was considered being a good people person.

Bernis died Tuesday, Dec. 7, 1999 at Central Community Hospital, Elkader, IA.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Jim and Leo; two brothers, Claire and Bill Slaughter; one son, Ronald Fite; and one great granddaughter, Amanda Callaway.

Survivors include her friend, Joe Hallock of Elkader, IA; two sons, Richard and wife Nancy of Cedar Rapids, IA, and Benny of Elkader, IA; two daughter, Mary Optiz of Chaska, MN; and Marie Olson of Postville, IA; nine grandchildren; one great grandchild; two sisters, Imogene Blank and Lula Belle Ronnfeldt; four brothers, Jim, Bud, Danny and Butch Slaughter.

Funeral services were held Saturday, December 11, 1999 at Giard United Methodist Church in Giard, Iowa, with Rev. Dennis Gilbert officiating.

Pall bearers were Buddy Slaughter, Jr., James Slaughter, Joe Ronnfeldt, Ken Matthews, Ray Slaughter, Cory Slaughter, and Russ Frank. Burial was in the Giard Cemetery at Farmersburg, Iowa.
