Funeral services for Edwin O'Brien were held Monday, February 8, 1993, 10:30 a.m. at St. Peter's Catholic Church, Clermont, Iowa. Celebrant was Rev. Roger L. Katz. Honorary pallbearers were Bill Langel, Bernard Bergan, Henry Christianson, Jr., Cliff J. Olson, and Howard Meyers. Casket bearers were Franklin Wacker, Milton Olson, Russell Peterson, Jim Farmer, Harold Peterson, and Wendell Meyers. Burial was in St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery, Elkader, Iowa.
Edwin Francis O'Brien was born December 27, 1928 at Strawberry Point, Iowa to James Frank and Mary (DeWitte) O'Brien. He was raised and educated in the Clayton County area attending rural elementary schools. He attended St. Joseph's High School at Elkader, Iowa.
He entered the U.S. Army on September 6, 1946 and served during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged on January 24, 1948. On April 12, 1949 he was united in marriage to Margie Olson at Dubuque, Iowa. Ten children were born to this union. Ed farmed near St. Olaf for a number of years, he worked in sales in the area, and spent a few years working at Norplex in Postville until failing health. He died at his rural St. Olaf home on Friday, February 5, 1993 at the age of sixty-four.
Edwin will be remembered as one who really enjoyed people and loved to visit. A great pastime for him was fishing and spending time with family and friends. Edwin was a lifetime member of the Clayton County Amvets Post No. 27.
He is survived by his wife Margie; nine sons, Dennis and his wife Rose of Ankeny, IA, Terry of Schaumburg, IL, Steven and wife Barbara of Dubuque, IA, James and his wife Dawn of Kansas City, MO, Jeffrey and his wife Leanne of Cedar Rapids, IA, Gregory of Clermont, IA, Randall of Chambersburg, PA, David of Madison, WI, and Michael of Clermont, IA; a daughter, Lori O'Brien of Eau Claire, WI; and eight grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Ronald; and two sisters, Dorothy Meyers and Patricia Ginsterblum.
