Accidentally Shot
Willie Kreisler of this City Meets His Death last Sunday
From an Accidental Discharge of a Shot Gun

On Sunday last the sad tidings came to this city from the farm of F.W. Kann that Willie Kreisler was dead and that his death was caused from the accidental discharge of a shot gun in his hands. Coroner Scholz was notified and at once went out to Mr. Kann’s farm where an inquest was held. A large number of the dead boy’s relatives and friends also went out to the farm. From the testimony of Richard Kann, son of F.W. Kann, we learn as follows: “Richard Kann and Willie Kreisler together went squirrel hunting on Sunday, October 16, 1898, and returned about 2:30 o’clock in the afternoon. They had one gun, a double barreled muzzle loading shot gun, and knew it was loaded when they returned. When they came home they went into the barn and were going up stairs to take the gun to the house. Willie Kreisler went up several steps and Richard Kann was at the foot of the stairs looking at a flock of sparrows when he heard the shot and looked around and saw Willie Kreisler lying on the floor and the gun about a foot from him.” F.W. Kann was then sworn and said: “I am a resident of Clayton county and that about 3 p.m., on the 16th day of October 1898, I was sitting in my house when my son Richard came running in and told me that Willie Kreisler was hurt. I ran out to the barn and looking down stairs saw Willie Kreisler lying on the floor breathing heavily. I ran for help and when I came back my boys met me and told me Willie was dead.”

The coroner’s jury composed of C.C. Niemeyer, C. Reinitz and F.G. Bierbaum returned the following verdict: Willie Kreisler came to his death on the 16th day of Oct. 1898, by being accidentally shot in his left side by a shot gun in his own hands while going up stairs.

Willie Kreisler was the son of Amelia and John Kreisler and was sixteen years nine months and 11 days of age at the time of his death. He leaves a father, mother, one brother and two sisters to mourn his untimely death. The funeral was held yesterday at 2 p.m. and the remains were interred in the city cemetery. The entire community extend their sympathy to the bereaved parents, brother and sister in their sad affliction.

Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows he was born Feb. 13, 1882 and is buried in the Guttenberg Cemetery
