Services Saturday for S/Sgt. Hakert
Strawberry Point (Special) - The remains of the late S/Sgt. Gregor Hakert are scheduled to arrive in Strawberry Point Friday morning, and funeral services will be in the Gill funeral chapel Saturday at 1:30 p.m. The Rev. Paul Kitterer of Elkader will officiate. Casket bearers will be George Hakert, William Freitag, Earl, Marvin, Herman and Melvin Hakert. The last four are cousins of the deceased. Burial will be in the cemetery at Mederville.Gregor Milford Hakert, son of Charles and Alma Olinger Hakert, was born on a farm near Mederville Dec. 28, 1914. He engaged in farming and construction work until volunteering, and was inducted into the army Feb. 4, 1941. He trained with an armored division at Ft. Benning, Ga., and Ft. Bragg, N.C. In Dec. 1942, he arrived in Africa where he was with General Patton's army and served until the summer of 1943 when he took part in the invasion of Sicily. From there he was transferred to England, when he took part in the invasion of France. He was killed in action July 29, 1944, at St. Lo, France.
Survivors are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hakert, Strawberry Point; a sister, Mrs. William Freitag (Greta) of Elkader; and a brother, George Hakert, Volga. A brother, Gene, preceded him in death.
