Mrs. Emilie Margaretha Elizabeth Beck, nee Helbig, daughter of Rev. Helbig and his wife Elizabeth nee Deckert, was born Nov. 16, 1866, at Sherrill Mound, Iowa. In her infancy she was baptized by her father Nov. 21, 1866, and later, after being duly instructed, she was confirmed at Boscobel, Wis., in April 1878.
On Nov. 9, 1892, she was united in holy wedlock to Mr. Dietrich Beck. This union was blessed with ten children, two preceding her in death, also her beloved husband.
The deceased was a hard worker in the church, organizing at this place the Ladies Aid Society, also in the community at large, where she was ever ready to lend a helping hand. To her husband and children she was a faithful helpmeet and mother, always thinking of them and others in time of need and illness.
In December, 1934, the deceased became ill and gradually grew worse. At times it seemed she would recover, but God willed that she should suffer for a long time and on July 28, 1936, at 5:30 a.m., she was called to her rest, after living 33 years on the farm and six years in retirement. Her last days of suffering were spent at the home of her son Joe and his wife, where all was done to ease her.
She reached the age of 69 years, eight months and 12 days. Besides her sisters, the Misses Alma, Clara, Esther, Agnes and Ida, of Dubuque, and brother, Captain C.F.Helbig, of Mason City, she is survived by her children : Clarence Beck of Littleport; Joseph Beck, of Edgewood; Homer Beck, Guttenberg; Mrs. Eleanore Berns, Elkader; Mrs. Edna Hildebrand, Edgewood; Mrs. Agnes Noggle, Strawberry Point; Mrs. Isabelle Lau, Hazleton; Mrs. Jeanette Yeisley, Cedar Rapids; also 31 grandchildren, and friends, who will miss her in this life to go to her counsel.
