From the Clayton County Register
Elkport: Carl Dietrich Beck, son of Mr. and Mrs. Simon Beck was born in Volga Township March 29, 1861.

Later his father purchased a farm near Garnavillo, where he grew to manhood, attended the country school and confirmation school and was accepted into fellowship with the members of the Evangelical Lutheran church in Garnavillo on March 28, 1875.

At the age of 19 he took a business course in Bayless college, after which he accepted the position as clerk with the A.C. Tiede Co., merchants and millers of Elkport and East Elkport.

On Nov. 9, 1892 he joined heart and hand with Miss Emilie Dollie Helbig. In the fall of 1897 he purchased the farm where for 32 years he labored faithfully to support his wife and children. In Jan. 1929 he retired from the farm, the labor of which was getting a little too hard for him, although he enjoyed good health, often going out to the farm to work.

On Saturday, Sept. 24, 1932, while visiting, he was suddenly stricken with a severe heart attack and Dr. Brown was called, administering medical remedies which give him great relief. He remained in bed two days but on the third day, Monday, Sept. 26, longed to come home to Elkport. Again he chored and on Thursday, Sept 29, walked around town.

That night, at midnight an infection of the gall-bladder set in and this, with the serious condition of his heart , proved too much, and under the efficient and faithful care of Dr. Kriebs, a friend since early manhood, and with frequent prayers and the administering of the Holy Sacrament, he peacefully passed on to the realm of glory which awaits the faithful.

He died Oct. 4, 1932, at 3:15 P.M. Two children preceded him in death, Veola Anita at the age of seven weeks, and Milton Henry, at the age of 23 years.

The living are Clarence of Littleport; Eleonore Berns, of Elkader; Joseph C., of Edgewood; Edna Hildebrand, Edgewood; Agnes Noggle, Strawberry Point; Isabelle Lau, Arlington; Homer, Guttenberg, and Jeanette, who teaches at Arnolds Park, Iowa; also 26 grandchildren.

He reached the age of 71 years , six months and five days.

The Misses Ida, Clara, Esther and Alma Helbig of Dubuque also attended the funeral of their brother-in-law, besides other relatives and hosts of friends. The relatives who attended from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. L. Salzgeber and Mrs. Wm. Thoma, Postville; Mrs. Hy. Meyer, Castalia; Mrs. Emma Engel and son Arthur Raymond, Albert Lea, Minn., Mrs. Martin Nehls, John Nehls, daughter Mrs. Jones and brother, Dennison, Iowa; Mr and Mrs. Henry Allenstein, Lamont and Mrs. E. Opperman, Strawberry Point.
