Calvin Harvey Henkes

Calvin Harvey Henkes, of Farmersburg, passed away Saturday, February 21, 2009, in McGregor following a sudden illness. He was 85.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, February 25, at St. John Lutheran Church, Farmersburg, with Rev. Christopher Staley officiating. Special music was by Lafonda Scherf, organist. Burial was in the Gooding Cemetery, rural Farmersburg. Casket bearers were grandsons: Nathan Wilcox, Toby Jurging, Shawn Kruse, Spencer Kruse, Scott Johanningmeier, Jared Johanningmeier, Joshua Miller, Lance Miller, Nicholas Meyer, Phillip Meyer and Andrew Schrader. . Leonard Funeral Home of Monona was in charge of arrangements.

Calvin was born on October 30, 1923, Wagner Township, Clayton County, to Monroe and Louise (Wagner) Henkes. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church, Farmersburg, by the Rev. R.H. Steege. Calvin attended Gooding Country School.

Calvin was united in marriage to Shirley Sass on April 10, 1946, in Farmersburg. Eight daughters were born to this union. Calvin farmed his entire life in the Farmersburg area. He also worked for other various carpenters over the years. Calvin enjoyed sports, fishing, hunting, playing cards, going to auctions and visiting with friends.

Calvin was preceded in death by his parents; two daughters, Connie Jurging and Carmen Schrader; two brothers, Alton and Vernis Henkes; three sisters, Alberta Rolland, Marietta (Virgil) Scheffert and Helen (Arno) Krambeer; and one sister-in-law, Arlene Sass.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley Henkes, Farmersburg; six daughters, Deanna Sandberg, Rockford, Ill., Marsha (Lloyd) Feickert, Marion, Sheryl (Steve) Kruse, Hiawatha, Janice (Rick) Johanningmeier, Monona, Jeanne (Paul) Miller, Luana, Debbie (Brian) Meyer, Monona; two sons-in-law, Bill Jurging, Cedar Rapids, Dave Schrader, Clear Lake; twenty grandchildren, Nathan (Naomi) Wilcox, Natasha Sandberg (fiancé, Scott Frank), Toby Jurging, Treva (Keith) Menke, Trisha Feickert, Staci (Matt) Schlicht, Shawn (Kelly) Kruse, Spencer Kruse, Nicole Bruene, Scott (Jessica) Johanningmeier, Jared Johanningmeier, Joshua Miller, Shantel Miller, Lance (Jennifer) Miller, Keisha Miller, Nicholas (Elsie) Meyer, Shannon (Wyatt) Dodd, Phillip Meyer (fiancé, Amanda Connor), Andrew (Heather) Schrader, Amy Schrader (fiancé, Alex Hanna); fourteen great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Glenda Henkes, brother-in-law, Donnie Sass; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Karl and Jeanette Wilker; and many nieces and nephews.
