Gaylord G. Pape
Gaylord Grant Pape, son of Grant and Martha Pape, nee Pape, was born at West Union, Fayette County, Iowa, April 3, 1930. He was baptized into the Lutheran faith at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Eldorado, Iowa. He received his schooling at West Union, and the No. 4 school, north of Luana. He graduated from Luana high school with the class of 1947. He was confirmed in the Lutheran faith in the St. Paul Lutheran Church, Monona, May 28, 1944. He was married to Beverly M. Ellenbolt June 13, 1951 in St. John Lutheran Church, Luana.
Upon graduation from high school, Gaylord had worked at farming, at his parents' home, and for neighbors. Upon marriage, he was working for Hall Swenson, but shortly afterwards he started to work at the Monona Farmers Co-op. Commission Co. where he remained about a year and a half. He then started to work for George Wolters' Truck Service doing semi-trailer driving. He worked there for 20 months. He then went to work for Impact Milling Company, Postville, as a mobile mill operator. He went into partnership with Dan J. McNeil, and operated under the name of Modern Milling Co. at Postville. In 1960, they dissolved the partnership and Gaylord came to Monona with his business, operating it under the name of Pape Milling Service.
In 1959 he purchased the D. W. Meier estate farm, one and one half miles south of Monona and in 1963 he and Mrs. Pape moved from town to their farm, where he was active in helping with all the work and management of the farm. Here he lived until death.
Gaylord was struck by a car Saturday evening, October 3, in front of his farm while herding cattle across the highway. He was taken to Community Memorial Hospital, Postville, and then Methodist and St. Mary's Hospitals, Rochester, Minnesota, where he passed away October 6, 1964. He never regained consciousness. He lived 34 years, six months and three days. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Luana.
He leaves to mourn his passing: his wife, Beverly; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Grant Pape, Luana; a sister, Mrs. Robert (Henrietta) Dull, Postville; brothers: Lorenz of Postville; Lyle and Gerald of Luana.
Funeral services were from St. John Lutheran Church, Luana, October 9, 1964, at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Luther A. Meyer in charge. He was laid to rest in Monona City cemetery.
