Sister Mary Geraghty
Sister Mary Consolata Geraghty, 75, of Cedar Rapids, a native of Monona, died Sunday Jan. 25, in a Cedar Rapids hospital following a long illness.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Jan. 27, in Sacred Heart Convent chapel, Cedar Rapids. Burial was in Mount Calvery Cemetery.
She was born Feb. 15, 1905, at Monona to Richard and Anna (Grady) Geraghty. She was a graduated of Monona High School. She entered the Congregation of the Cedar Rapids Sisters of Mercy on July 15, 1931, and made her final profession of vows on Jun 23, 1937.
She taught for 37 years in junior high schools staffed by the Sisters of Mercy. She wa a teacher in schools in Cedar Rapids, Marion, Elma, Waterloo, Ames, DeWitt, Kalispell, Mont., and Minneapolis, Minn. She retired to Sacred Heart Convent in 1970.
She received a bachelor of arts degree from Loras College, Dubuque, and completed additional studies at Mount Mercy College.
Survivors are two sisters, Mrs. Thomas Manton of Cedar Rapids and Mrs. Charles Fitzpatrick of Davenport, and one brother, Joseph Geraghty of Cedar Rapids.
Among those attending the funeral services were Mr. and Mrs. Ray Grady of McGregor, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Grady and Peter of Harpers Ferry and Mrs. Angela Peters of Worthington.
A classmate, the Rev. Donald Peters of Worthington, was in the sanctuary with five other priests at whose schools Sister Mary taught.
