Mabel L. Thiese

Funeral services for Mabel L. Thiese were held at 10:30 a.m. on April 24, 2004 at Peace United Church of Christ in Elkader with interment at East Side Cemetery, Elkader, Iowa.

Mabel L. Thiese, 88, of Elkader, Iowa, died Thursday, April 22, 2004, at Mercy Health Center in Dubuque, Iowa, following a long illness. She was born February 15, 1916, in Boardman Township to Herman and Louisa (Polkow) Glawe. She was baptized at Zion Lutheran Church in Clayton Center and later confirmed at Peace United Church of Christ in Elkader. Mabel received her education in rural country school in Upper Pony Hollow.

She was united in marriage to Ewald Thiese on October 19, 1937. They farmed until 1950. They lived on an acreage until 1963, when they moved to her home in Elkader. She remained there until entering the Elkader Care Center in February of 2003. Mabel worked in the house keeping department of Central Community Hospital for seven years, did altering for Theis Clothing and for many others in the community, and the last twenty years helped her sister at Johnson’s Restaurant. She enjoyed dancing, sewing, playing cards and traveling.

Survivors include her brother, Harley (Irma) Glawe, of St. Olaf; her sister, Berniece Johnson, of Elkader and numerous nieces and nephews. Mabel was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Ewald on October 29, 1986, three sisters, Hattie Lembke, Amanda Ihde and Rosina Fette, three brothers, Edwin, Harold and Clarence Glawe and a nephew, Larry Ihde.
