Funeral services were held for Arthur Leo Kramer, Jr. at 11:00 a.m. on March 23, 2004 at Leonard Funeral Home, in Elkader, Iowa with interment in the East Side Cemetery at Elkader.
Arthur Leo Kramer, Jr. 92, of Oelwein, formerly of Elkader, died Thursday, March 18, 2004, in Mercy Hospital in Oelwein, Iowa, following a brief illness. He was born December 15, 1911, in Elkader to Arthur and Effie (Boots) Kramer, Sr.
He and his parents lived on a homestead near Hugo, Colorado until Arthur was thirteen years old. They moved back to Elkader where he graduated from Elkader High School. While in high school and as a young man, Arthur enjoyed sports such as football, baseball, wrestling and basketball.
He was united in marriage to Elizabeth Jane “Betty” McLaughlin on June 11, 1939, at the Methodist church in Jesup, Iowa. Arthur entered the U.S. Navy in 1942, serving during WW II. He served to the 3rd Marine Division. He was honorably discharged in 1945. He worked in the South Pacific, Guam, Gaudacanal, Saipan and Bougainville with the SeaBees assigned for Clayton County, Buchanan County, City of Independence and the State of Iowa. He was a Civil Engineer for the United States Bureau of Reclamation for thirty years. He worked on the construction of dams, canals, tunnels and highways throughout the west. He retired to Roseville, CA and then to Oelwein. He was a member of the Masons for fifty years.
Arthur is survived by his wife Betty Kramer, of Oelwein; his children, Kathy (Steve) Herbst, of Folsom, CA and Ronald Kramer, of Omak, WA; three grandchildren, Lisa Lockart, Ronald V. Kramer and Erika Adell; five great-grandchildren, Cody, Lauren, Kaelan, Alexander and Luke Arthur and a sister, Katherine McCormick, of Elkader. His parents preceded him in death.
