Robert H. Sass

Robert H. Sass, 71, of 6302 Sauk Trail, formerly of 25350 Michael Lane, Sherrill, Iowa, died at 3:11 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22, 2008, at The Finley Hospital, Dubuque.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 25, at Lord of Life Lutheran Church, 2899 Hales Mill Road, Asbury. Burial will be in Dubuque Memorial Gardens. Military rites will be accorded at a later date. Friends may call from 2 to 6 p.m. today, at Behr's Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street, Dubuque.

Robert was born on Oct. 16, 1936, in Farmersburg, Iowa, son of Henry and Emma (Wilker) Sass.

Robert attended school at Dubuque Senior High School. He served in the Navy. Robert married Willeen E. Bergfels on Aug. 3, 1957, at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Dubuque.

Mr. Sass was employed at the John Deere Dubuque Works and Flexsteel Industries, before going to work for the Dubuque Packing Company for 26 years until his retirement.

In his spare time, Robert enjoyed spending time with his family, fishing, golfing and playing cards. He was a die-hard Chicago Bears, Atlanta Braves and Iowa Hawkeyes fan, and watched or listened to every game.

Surviving are his wife, Willeen E. Sass, of Dubuque; two children, Diane Atwood, of Cedar Rapids, and Robert W. (Kristi) Sass, of Dubuque; four grandchildren, Amanda and Angela Atwood and William and Rachel Sass; two sisters, Betty (Art) Savery, of Davenport, and Bonnie Reinerson, of Yuma, Ariz.; a stepbrother, Evertt (Sue) Webb, of Steamboat Rock; a stepfather, Elroy Webb, of Dubuque; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Verona Clark and Mary Anthoney; and three brothers-in-law, Dennis Clark, Paul Anthoney and Ron Reinerson.

Bob's family would like to extend a special thank-you to Finley Hospital third floor, in Dubuque, especially Janet, Sheri, Dawn, Laurie and Joe, and to Dr. Schope and Dr. Brian Moran for the care and concern they showed to Bob and his family.
