George A. Chappell
VOLGA, Iowa -- George Arthur Chappell, 92, died Thursday, Feb. 21, 2008, at Mercy Living Plus Care Center, Oelwein, after an extended illness.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27, at United Methodist Church, Volga, with Pastor Carroll Robinson officiating. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Volga. Friends may call after 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27, at the church. The Leonard-Muller Funeral Home & Crematory, Strawberry Point, is in charge of arrangements.
He was born March 7, 1915, near Volga, son of Arthur and Gertrude (Rogers) Chappell. He was raised and educated in the area, graduating from the Volga High School in 1933.
He married Loretta Keilholtz on Feb. 7, 1935, in Manchester; she preceded him in death on July 26, 1998. Three sons were born to this union.
Together they lived and farmed north of Volga until retiring in 1987, when they moved into town. George later moved to Strawberry Point and then Oelwein.
Surviving are his sons, Don (Ruth) Chappell and Lloyd (Jo) Chappell, both of Cedar Rapids, and Ken (Wanda) Chappell, of Arlington; two sisters, Marie Marmann McKenna, of Breese, Ill., and Dorothy Fall, of Des Moines; six grandchildren, Jackie (Dave) Green, of Des Moines, Jeff (Jodie) Chappell, of Rowlett, Texas, Kurt Chappell, of Arlington, Janet (Mike) Beer, of Bondurant, Brent (Holly) Chappell, of Cedar Rapids, and Jason Chappell, of Marion; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
George also was preceded in death by a sister, Berniece Holmstrom, and a daughter-in-law, Marlene Chappell.
