George W. Thornton
George W. Thornton, 82, of McGregor died Monday, February 25, 2008 at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon following a long illness. Funeral services were held Friday, February 29, 2008 at First Lutheran Church, rural McGregor, with burial in Pleasant Grove Cemetery, McGregor, with military honors.
George was born June 4, 1925 in McGregor to Ross and Mary (Stahl) Thornton. He served in the U.S. Navy and married Lillian Ayers December 13, 1945 in Waukon. He worked as a manager for Farm Service in the lumber yard from 1955 to 1981, at which time he worked in the offices until his retirement in 1987.
George was very active in several committees at First Lutheran Church and a 50-year member of the American Legion. George was an avid fisherman, enjoyed doing woodworking, crafts, and especially enjoyed and loved his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Lillian; two sons, Jerald (Sandra) Thornton and Dan (Denise) Thornton, both of McGregor; seven grandchildren, John, Julie, Kay, Trampus, Becci, Chad and Erin; 13 great-grandchildren; a son-in-law, James Cota of Harpers Ferry; and three sisters, Amy Lovell of Elmwood, WI, Pearl Witenberg of Cedar Rapids, and Ann Franke of Milwaukee, WI.
George was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Shara Cota; five brothers, Harold, Milo, LeRoy, John and Elton; and a sister, Delores Matthews.
