Morris Victor Amundson

Funeral services for Morris Amundson were Monday, Sept. 23, 2002 at 11 a.m. in the Marion Lutheran Church at Gunder. The Rev. Marshall E. Hahn officiated. The Schutte Funeral and Cremation Service of Clermont was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the church cemetery with Military Honors by the Sheehan-Olson American Legion Post No 375. Casketbearers were Dave and Steve Amundson, Paul, Mike and Jeff Wiles.

Morris Victor Amundson, the son of Ole Amundson and Nina (Loftsgard) Amundson, was born June 30, 1917, on a farm in Clayton County, near Clermont, Iowa. He died Friday, Sept. 20, 2002 in the Good Samaritan Center in Postville, Iowa. He had reached the age of 85 years, 2 months, and 20 days.

He was baptized and confirmed in the East Clermont Lutheran Church. Morris graduated from the Clermont High School in 1934. Following his graduation, he worked in the area as a farm hand for various farmers. Morris joined the U. S. Army Air Corps and served overseas during World War II. He worked as an independent trucker in the Clermont area for several years. In 1954 they moved to Spring Dale, Hildur's family farm, which is located south of Gunder. Morris moved into the Clermont Apartments in 1993. He became a resident of the Good Samaritan Center in Postville in 1996. As part of the Amundson family tradition, Morris sang with the Luren Singers of Decorah. They appeared at many events that took place in the area and also traveled to other communities. The group made several trips to Norway, and Morris went along in 1983. Morris had a great love for his family and his heritage. He was a member of the Marion Lutheran Church at Gunder and sang in the church choir and served on the Church Council as well as on various other committees of the church. He was a member of the Sheehan Olson American Legion for over 50 years, the Luren Singers, the Clermont Cooperative Board of Directors, the Gunder Cheese Factory Board, the Clayton County DHIA, and a member of the Holstein-Friesian Association and the Iowa Holstein Association.

On November 6, 1948 he was married to Velma Hildur Opsand in the Marion Lutheran Church at Gunder. To this union were born three children, Janet, David and Steven.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Hildur, who died in 1990; brother, Clifford Amundson, who died in infancy; brother, Almer Amundson; and one brother-in-law, Gordon Landsgard.

Surviving are his children, Janet (Paul) Wiles Winston Salem, NC, David (Dawn) Amundson, Elgin, IA, and Steven Amundson, Ames, IA; 6 grandchildren: Mike, Jeff, Melissa, and Pam Wiles and Emily and Thomas Amundson; one sister, Norene Landsgard; three brothers, Arthur (Norma) Amundson; Clarence (Jo) Amundson; and Kenneth (Ruth) Amundson; and a sister-in-law, Marjorie Amundson, all of Clermont, Iowa.
