Dorothy Lorraine Moritz Schultz

MONONA, Iowa -- Dorothy Lorraine Moritz Schultz, 88, of Monona, died Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2008, at Garden View Assisted Living, Monona, of age-related causes.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Monona, with the Rev. Allen Bidne officiating. Burial will be in St. John Lutheran Cemetery, Luana (Iowa). Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Leonard Funeral Home, Monona. Friends also may call after 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the church.

Surviving are her husband of 71 years, Malin; their children, Jerome (Elaine) Schultz, of Sun Lakes, Ariz., Marilyn (Albert) Runau, of Marion, Bette (Ronnie) Keehner, of Prairie du Chien, Wis., and Brenda (Mark) Howard, of Elgin; a daughter-in-law, Vicky Schultz, of Arcadia, Wis.; 18 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Lois Powell, of Ventura, Calif.; two sisters-in-law, Jean Prentice, of Colesburg, and Donna Radloff, of Farmersburg; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Hazel and Ervin Moritz; two brothers, Homer Moritz and Alan Moritz; two sons, James Schultz and William Schultz; a brother-in-law, Ross Powell; two sisters-in-law, Cleva Schultz and Jessie Smith; and her mother and father-in-law, Malida and William Schultz.

A special thank-you from the family goes out to the Heart of Iowa Hospice and the entire staff at Garden View Assisted Living in Monona, Iowa.

Dorothy Schultz

Dorothy Schultz, 88

Dorothy Lorraine Moritz Schultz, of Monona, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2008, at Garden View Assisted Living Center in Monona due to age-related causes. She was 88.

Services were held on Saturday, Jan. 12, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Monona. The Rev. Allen Bidne officiated. Burial followed in St. John Lutheran Cemetery, Luana. Leonard Funeral Home of Monona was in charge of arrangements.

Dorothy was born April 4, 1919, on a farm south of Postville, to Ervin and Hazel (Lorentsen) Moritz. She was baptized May 20, 1928, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Postville. For most of her childhood, Dorothy lived with her family on a farm in Grand Meadow Township and she attended the Luana School. In 1935, her family moved to a farm near Farmersburg. Dorothy graduated from Elkader High School on May 26, 1936.

On November 11, 1936, she was married to Malin Schultz at St. John's Lutheran Church in Luana, by Reverend H. P. Kumpf. Dorothy was confirmed on November 28, 1937, at St. John's Lutheran church in Luana.

Dorothy and Malin farmed north of Luana for twenty nine years. In 1965, they retired and moved to Monona when their oldest son took over the farming operation. They became members of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Monona. Dorothy was a Sunday school teacher, Superintendent of the Sunday school and Bible School programs and an ELCA member in the churches in Luana and Monona.

In Monona, Dorothy worked as a waitress for The Americana Restaurant for several years and then as the bookkeeper for Wilke's Sure Save until she retired in 1983. Malin and Dorothy spent the next ten winters in Chandler, Arizona where they made many new friends.

In their younger years, Dorothy and Malin loved to attend dances from East Dubuque, Ill., to Clear Lake. They also enjoyed square dancing. They were avid card players and enjoyed traveling. Dorothy spent her spare time reading, sewing, playing bridge, gardening and making handicrafts.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, Hazel and Ervin Moritz; two brothers, Homer Moritz and Alan Moritz; two sons, James Schultz and William Schultz; one brother-in-law, Ross Powell; two sisters-in-law, Cleva Schultz and Jessie Smith; and her mother and father-in-law, Malida and William Schultz.
