Elvira Jeanette (Davis) Panncke, daughter of Thomas Soloman and Delia (Ramaker) Davis, was born December 25, 1911, at Lime Springs, Iowa. She passed away Friday, April 12, 1996, in the Good Samaritan Center at Postville, Iowa. She had reached the age of 84 years, 3 months and 17 days.She was baptized in the Methodist Church at Lime Springs, Iowa, and confirmed in St. Paul Lutheran Church at Postville, Iowa. Elvira attended the country school near her home. She attended high school in Lime Springs, driving her horse and buggy to classes. During high school, she worked in the drug store and part-time in the Price Williams Grocery Store. Following graduation, she enrolled and was graduated from a two-year teaching program at Iowa State Teachers College, now the University of Northern Iowa, at Cedar Falls, Iowa. Elvira taught in the Luana School for four years.
On March 2, 1935, Elvira was married to Harold Panncke at Galena, Illinois. To this union four children were born, Jane, Ruth, Mary and Bill. The couple farmed southwest of Luana on the family farm for over 60 years. Elvira enjoyed milking the cows, which she did until about 1989. She loved gardening and to have her family and friends around her. She became a resident of the Good Samaritan Center in Postville in October of 1995.
She is preceded in death by her parents, a son-inlaw, John Green; a sister, Dorothy Davis; two brothers, John W. Davis and T. Wayne Davis; and a brother-in-law, Arno Wilker.
Surviving is her husband, Harold, her children, Jane and husband, Leon Blumhagen; and Ruth and husband, Dan Bruns, all of Postville; Mary and husband, Leland Gayer, of Sioux City, Iowa; and Bill of Luana; 8 grandchildren, Alan Blumhagen, Anne Gill, Audrey Henkes, Adrian Blumhagen, Barbara Sutton, Wanda Schnuelle, Beth Homeister, and Sarah Gayer; 6 great-grandchildren, Nick Henkes, Cody Henkes, Caymon Blumhagen, Amy Green, Christopher Schnuelle and Andrea Schnuelle; and 3 sisters-in-law, Hazel (Mrs. John W. Davis) of Cresco, Iowa; Adele (Mrs. T. Wayne Davis) of Cedar Falls, Iowa; and Ella (Mrs. Arno Wilker) of Postville.
Elvira was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville, the Women of the ELCA and she taught Sunday School for many years. She was also a member of the Grand Meadow Country Club for over 50 years and the Retired Teachers Association of Clayton County.
