Larry Best, 57, Garnavillo, died Tuesday, October 2, 2007, at Central Community Hospital in Elkader, following a brief illness.
The first born son of Carlys and Ila Mae (Henning) Best, entered the world on August 28, 1950, in Prairie du Chien, WI. Larry graduated from Garnavillo High School. He attended college at the University of Northern Iowa, Upper Iowa University and graduated from Luther College with double majors in education and history, and a minor in sociology.
Larry made many contributions to Northeast Iowa. In his professional life, Larry's broad educational background and work ethic allowed him to pursue a variety of careers. Never straying far from agriculture, Larry farmed the family century farm and developed a good herd of commercial and registered Angus cows. Larry worked many years as a reserve deputy sheriff for the Clayton County Sheriff's Department, and rounded out his career working the last eleven years as a federal crop insurance adjuster.
His community involvement extended beyond his professional pursuits. An accomplished rider himself, Larry served as president of the North East Iowa Saddle Club Association and the Iowa Breeder's Futurity. He judged local and regional horse shows. He enjoyed spending time working cattle with the horses and trail riding and camping with his wife. Larry delighted in passing his love for horses to granddaughter Ella. He was also a founding member of the Turkey River Chapter of Ducks Unlimited, serving several terms as committee chairman and helping make it one of the most recognized small chapters in the state.
Larry enjoyed hosting hunting camp at the Best Farm during turkey and deer season. "The General" loved to plan the hunts before his group took off for a morning or afternoon in the woods. His wit, outdoor wisdom, and hospitality were extended to three generations of hunters, fostering a legacy of safety, ethics, and skill.
Larry was a devoted family man, taking care of his parents, delighting in his children and doting on his grandchildren. A man of character and humility, Larry would go out of his way to make sure that everyone in his personal and business dealing was treated fairly.
Those left behind to cherish his memory are his wife, Shirley Best; daughter, Staci (Dr. Kevin) Esch, Strawberry Point; son, Eric Welter and Trish Schiltz, Iowa City; granddaughters, Gabriella and Eva Esch, Strawberry Point; father, Carlys Best, Strawberry Point; brother, Dale (Lori) Best, Texas and former wife, Sally Lange, Burr Oak.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Ila Mae Best.
