Selina Thelma (Olson) Embretson, 89, of Farmersburg, Iowa, passed away peacefully from a stroke on Thursday morning, December 6, 2007 at Central Community Hospital. She was born September 18, 1918 in Marion Township on the Olson family farm near Gunder, IA. She is the daughter of Ole Emil Olson and Margit (Landsgaard) Olson. She was baptized and confirmed at Marion Lutheran Church, Gunder, IA. Selina graduated from Postville high School in 1936 and went on to Elkader Junior College to receive her teaching certificate. She taught in the Gunder School #1, Marion Township. She later attended Iowa State Teachers College (UNI), Cedar Falls, IA and Upper Iowa University, Fayette, IA. Selina married Lorando Morris Embretson on April 3, 1948 at Marion Lutheran Church, Gunder Iowa. To this union four children were born: Lee Owen, Lorayne Marsha, Craig David, and Susan Kay. Lorando and Selina raised their children and farmed on the Embretson family farm at Bullthistle Corner. Selina resumed her elementary teaching career in 1964 at Guttenberg Community School. She taught in the MFL school district at Farmersburg and Luana, retiring from MFL in 1981. For many years Selina was active in the Norway Lutheran Church, St. Olaf, IA. She taught Sunday school held positions in the various Women’s Organizations of the church, enjoyed participation in Smorgasbord gatherings, quilting, preparing schools kits and layette kits. Selina was also active for many years as a 4-H leader. Following Selina’s retirement she continued to lead a busy and multi faceted life which included grandchildren, traveling, gardening, bird watching, canning, baking Norwegian delicacies, knitting, trout fishing, crocheting, sewing, reading and crafts. Her travels included a trip to Norway, nine ventures to Alaska to visit her daughters and many trips to Chippewa Falls, WI with Lee and Paula’s family. Selina’s grandchildren encompassed her life and she devoted her time and her nurturing and loving spirit to care for them. Selina’s family is undoubtedly her greatest legacy. In her later years Selina enjoyed family time, spending time with great grandchildren, and was still an avid reader. For the past year she resided at the Elkader Care Center where she enjoyed participating in various activities, especially the van excursions. Selina will be remembered by her children Lee & Paula (Johnson) Embretson of Farmersburg, IA, Lorayne Embretson & spouse David Cummings of Anchorage, AK, Craig Embretson of Farmersburg, IA, and Susan Embretson of Anchorage, AK.
