Adam Lange was born Jan. 11, 1828 in Mardorf, Kurhessen, Germany and died in peace Aug. 7, 1909, in Giard Township, Clayton County, Iowa, at the age of 81 yrs. 6 mo. and 26 days. Sept. 14, 1851 he was married to Anna Katherine Gutheil who preceded him in death in March 1892. Their union was blessed with 9 children, 7 sons and 2 daughters, of whom 2 sons and 1 daughter have been called in death. Father Lange was of a healthy robust nature and up to his 80th birthday had never been sick. Last winter he suffered somewhat from rheumatism until on the eve of May 11th, he suffered a stroke of paralysis, making him entirely helpless. Another stroke came to him Aug. 6th and hastened his death. Father Lange was one of the oldest settlers of Giard, having come there in about 1845. During his long life he made many friends and formed many acquaintances. He was an earnest Christian, active in church and well-acquainted with his bible. 6 children, some grandchildren and a host of other friends and relatives mourn his death. He was laid to rest in the Giard cemetery to sleep there until the resurrection morning.
