The death of Mrs. Addie Cortis Egbert Tuesday, March 17, brought to a close at the age of 78 years, the life of one who has been closely identified with Monona for over 65 years.
He work as a talented artist and an accomplished musician made her many friends in the community. Hundreds of her paintings given to them are a testimony of a generous and thoughtful nature.
She was a member of Pilgrim Evangelical church, formerly the Congregational church and of the Ladies Aid society connected with them. For many years she sang in the choir and gave of her time and money to the support of many worthy causes. She was a member of the Woman’s Relief Corps for 44 years and the Monona Chapter No. 256 O.E.S. for 42 years and had held offices in both organizations.
Mrs. Addie Cortis Egbert youngest daughter of Allen and Anna Smith Cortis was born at National, Feb. 24, 1864. When she was 9 nears old the family moved to Hardin where they lived for a few years before coming to Monona where Mr. Cortis engaged in the mercantile business.
On Thanksgiving day, Nov. 26, 1885, she was married to David Egbert at her home in Monona. After residing 14 years on the Elmer Egbert farm east of town, they retired to Monona. Mr. Egbert died Oct. 18, 1910.
Rev. H.W. Raduege, assisted by Rev. H.W. Farnham officiated at the services held in Pilgrim Evangelical church Friday, March 20, at two o’clock. Two selections, “The old Rugged Cross” and “Rock of Ages” were sung by Mrs. Farnham and Mrs. George Wiethorn, accompanied by Mrs. Raduege. Members of the Relief Corps and Monona Chapter No. 256 O.E.S. attended the services in a body.
Surviving are one son, Lloyd E., and wife; a nephew, Leslie F. Walker of Los Angeles, Calif., a niece, Mrs. Hazel Frazer, Brentwood Heights, Calif., and several cousins, among them Horace H. Smith of Monona, Cash M. Smith of Postville and others in California. Two sisters, Mrs. Janie Walker, Mrs. Julia Howard and two brothers, Monroe and Webster, preceded her in death.
Those acting as pallbearers were: Dr. G.W. Tapper, Dr. W.F. Humphrey, Joe Walch, James Cunningham, Frank Montgomery, H.C. Fox, Ed. W. Pape and George Humke. Burial was in East Side [Monona city] cemetery.
