Forrest D. Shaffer, 92, of Elgin, died Saturday morning, December 1, 2007, at home, following a long illness. He was born December 6, 1914, in Pleasant Valley Township to John D. and Inez (Howard) Shaffer. He graduated from Elgin High School in 1933.

He was united in marriage to Darlene A. Yearous on August 18, 1935. They are the parents of three children. Forrest was engaged in farming all of his life. During his earlier years, he attended Illyria Community Church and Sunday school on a regular basis. After moving into Elgin in 1974, he began attending First Baptist Church, where he has continued to be a member.

Forrest enjoyed his family, his Bible, singing and sharing his life stories with family and friends. He also enjoyed woodworking, spending winters in Arizona and traveling. He spent a month, two different years helping on the Mission field in Guatemala.

Survivors include his wife, Darlene Shaffer, Elgin; his children, Dalene (Jim) Whitford, Volga, Ruby J. Hild, Tempe, AZ and Robert (Terry) Shaffer, Elgin; eleven grandchildren: Dr. Forrest (Glenna) Whitford, Volga, James L. Whitford, Volga, Dr. Kevin (Carolyn) Whitford, Rochester, MN, Bradley (Sherry) Whitford, St. Peters, MO, Major Dean (Brenda) Whitford, Fort Leavenworth, KS, Darren Hild, Gilbert, AZ, Lance Hild, San Diego, CA, Amy (Bill) Kerr, Elgin, Jack (Lori) Shaffer, Berkeley Springs, WV, Lisa (Jock) Naert, Ankeny, Karen Shaffer (friend Alex Eischeid), Cedar Rapids: twenty-three great-grandchildren; a brother, Gerald (Geraldine) Shaffer, Vinton; a sister-in-law, Marilyn Shaffer, Arlington and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents: brothers, Howard and Reynold Shaffer and a daughter-in-law, JoAnn Wilson Shaffer.

Memorial services were held on Tuesday, December 4, 2007, at the First Baptist Church in Elgin, with Rev. Lee Boleyn officiating.
