AMOS SCHURTZMAN
The relatives and friends of Amos Schurtzman were shocked to hear of his sudden death Tuesday, November 17, 1936.
For several weeks he had not been feeling well, but was able to be up and around on his farm. The cause of his death was a heart attack.
Amos was born at Waukon Junction, Iowa, July 18, 1887. He was the oldest child of H. A. and Agnes Scrogum Schurtzman. He also was the last member of the Schurtzman family. His only sister, Evelyn, passed away November 13, 1897. His parents in 1926 and his only brother, Alvan, December 20, 1933.
When a small child his parents moved to North McGregor, now Marquette, Iowa, and resided at the old homestead north of town until 1907, when they moved to their new home on Toney Hill.
Amos attended the public school here and after graduation he assisted his father in the meat market. Later on he entered the services of the C.M. St. P. and P. Railway Company, as locomotive fireman and engineer.
In 1918 he entered the World War with Co. D. 312 Engineers, 87th Division. After returning from Europe in 1919, he resumed his services with the railway company until 1924, when he took charge of his parent's farm, one mile north of town, and continued farming until his death.
On February 14, 1935, he was married at Monona, Iowa, to Mrs. Letha Thompson. Surviving the widow are his grandmother, Mrs. Charlotte Scrogum, aunts, Mrs. E. Johnson, Mrs. M. Grady, Mrs. K. Ross and his uncles, John Scrogum of Marquette and Chas. Scrogum of McGregor.
The funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at the Marquette Methodist church with the Rev. Stanley F. Kenderdine officiating.
Burial was in Pleasant Grove cemetary at McGregor.
Marquette American Legion Post No. 305 conducted the services at the grave.
Pallbearers were George Harrington, Lloyd Horning, Nobe Wells, Art Wilkinson, Don Herron, Harry Stull, Elmer Langlie, Jack Waltz.
