Vera M. Palas, 79, of Elkader, died Monday. January 1, 2007, at Central Community Hospital. Elkader, after several months battling cancer. She was born June 10. 1927, on the family farm near St. Olaf. the eighth of eleven children to Albert and Lucinda (Gottschalk) Glawe. She was baptized September 6, 1927. and confirmed June 22, 1941, both at Peace United Church of Christ, Elkader. She was united in marriage to LuVern Palas on September 20, 1948, at Peace Church, Elkader. Two children were born to this union.

Vera worked at Elkader Wire and Display in Elkader for many years. She enjoyed baseball, especially the Chicago Cubs, a good game of cards and cooking. Vera loved spending time with family. Vera was proud of the fact that she won the contest for her complex to be named Hillside Family Apartments. She was an active member of Peace United Church of Christ, Mary's Circle with the Women's Fellowship, senior citizens and the Friendly Neighbor Club.

She is survived by her children, Judy (Dennis) Harringa, Forest City, and Lee Palas, Richmond, VA; grandchildren, Ryan (Emily) Harringa, Polk City, Tara Zuck, Lawler, Lisa Palas, Calmar and Troy Palas, U.S. Marine Corps. stationed in Iraq; step-grandchildren, Lisa (Joe) Kagel, Monticello, MN, Tom (Amy) Manumn, Maple Lake, MN, Travis (Kim) Manumn, Monticello, MN: great-grandchildren, Jonathan Shannon, Calmar, Daniel Harringa, Polk City; step-great-grandchildren, Callie and Rylie Kagel, Monticello, MN and Finley and Sailor Manumn, Maple Lake, MN; brothers, Bernell (Wilma) Glawe, Elkader; sisters, Betty Leuchtenmacher, Elkader and Bonnie Jeffrey, Arlington, TX; brother-in-law, Clifford Palas, Elkader, sisters-in-law, Jennadine Walters, Ankeny, Julaine (Roger) Mohning, Monona, Elvera Palas, Elkader, Marlene Glawe, St. Olaf and many nieces and nephews.

Vera was preceded in death by her parents; her husband on May 25, 1997; granddaughter, Danelle Harringa; daughter-in-law, Donna Palas; brothers, Lloyd Glawe, Verdean Glawe, and Raymond in infancy; sisters, Gladys Coobs, Lucille O'Niel and Darlene in infancy.

Funeral were held Wednesday, January 3, 2007, at Peace United Church of Christ, Elkader, with Pastor Andrea Mericle officiating. Organist was Laura Moser and soloist was David Wilker. The honorary bearer was Troy Palas.

Casket Bearers were Ryan Harringa, Victor Glawe, Bruce Glawe, Doug Glawe, John Palas, and David Palas.

Burial followed at East Side Cemetery, Leonard Funeral Home, Elkader is in charge of arrangements. Condolences may be left with: www.leonardfuneralhomes.com .
