North Iowa Times, Sept 19, 1907 – TIMES PAST SECTION
Elizabeth (HAMILTON) DOUGLASS

DIED. At the home of Gilbert DOUGLASS, in McGregor, on Saturday, Sept. 17, at 2 a.m., after a long illness Mrs. Elizabeth DOUGLASS, mother of Mrs. R. NOBLE, and Edmund and George DOUGLASS, of this vicinity. The deceased was a venerable lady for whom all felt a deep regard, and her death demands more than a passing notice. Elizabeth HAMILTON was born in Vermont April 25th, 1787, and at her death was in the 78th year of her age just as old as the Constitution of our Country. She was married in 1806 to Gilbert Douglass, emigrated to New York in 1813, to Illinois in 1824 where her husband died, leaving her the care of several children. In 1845 she removed to this (Clayton) county, where she has since resided. The feebleness of her age added to the pains of disease were borne with a patience and composure that exhibited a consciousness of having done her part well in life and a confidence in a glorious eternity beyond the grave. May He who rules our lives guide us in that path which leads to the blissful future, merited by the worthy mother whose virtues we feebly commemorate.

DIED - At the house of Gilbert Douglas, in McGregor, on Saturday, Sept. 17th, at 2 A.M., after a long illness, Mrs. Elizabeth Douglas, mother of Mrs. K. Noble, and Edmund and Gilbert Douglas of this vicinity.

The deceased was a venerable lay for whom all felt a deep regard, and her death demands more than a passing notice:

Elizabeth Hamilton was born in Vermont, April 26th, 1787; and at her death was in the 78th year of her age - just as old as the Constitution of our country.

She was married in 1806 to Gilbert Douglas, emigrated to New York in 1813, to Illinois in 1831 where her husband died, leaving her the care of several children.

In 1845 she removed to this (Clayton) County, where she has since resided. In 1860 she was afflicted with Palsy, but recovering somewhat she enjoyed reasonable health till 1864, when a second shock quite prostrated her and for many weeks whe has been comparatively helpless.

The feebleness of age added to the pains of disease were borne with a patience and composure that exhibited a consciousness of having done her part well in life and a confidence in a glorious eternity beyond the grave.

Her last hours were soothed by the most affectionate attention of her children and friends. Gilbert, the son with whom she resided, had the more special charge of his mother, and the devotion he exhibited toward her marks him as a man who well-deserved so excellent a parent.

May He who rules our lives guide us in that path which leads to the blissful future, merited by the worthy mother whose virtues we feebly commemorate.

~Weekly North Iowa Times, Wednesday, September 21, 1864; pg 2

Notes: The spelling of her surname varies from record to record. Unlike the reprint in the 1907 'Times Past' section as posted above, in the original her surname is spelled DOUGLAS, rather than Douglass. The 1860 U.S. census, Mendon twp. also spelled the surname without the second 's'. The surname spelling on her gravestone in Pleasant Grove cemetery is DOUGLAS.
