Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. October 15, 2007 at First Congregational Church, Elkader, IA. Interment was at Oak Lawn Cemetery, Cresco, IA. Leonard Funeral Home of Elkader, IA was in charge of arrangements.
John Albert Wildman, 79, son of Albert & Bess (Buffton) Wildman, was born July 13, 1928, in Cresco, IA. He died Thursday, October 11, 2007, following a brief illness at Central Community Hospital, Elkader, IA.
John graduated from Cresco High School in 1946. While in school, he excelled as an athlete in track and football. He attended Winona State College in Winona, MN.
In 1950, he enlisted in the United States Air Force. He was stationed at Keeler Air Force Base in Biloxi, MS. John was Honorably Discharged as a Staff Sergeant in 1953.
In 1953, he began working as a Conservation Technician in the Howard County District Soil Conservation office. He then transferred to Austin, MN. In 1958, John transferred to Elkader Soil Conservation Services Area office as an Engineering Technician. He worked for the Soil Conservation Service for thirty-five years, retiring in 1988.
On August 17, 1958, he was united in marriage to Mary A. Rathert of Cresco. To this union, two daughters were born, Ann and Amy.
John was a member of the Elkader Golf and Country Club, the Elkader Masonic Lodge, the First Congregational Church, a Charter Member of the Elkader Jaycees and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. John's interests included golf, hunting, fishing, and he was an avid St. Louis Cardinals and Iowa Hawkeye's fan. He was a true outdoorsman. John was a very gentle man who was devoted to his family. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Mary, Elkader; daughter, Ann (Doug) Parvin, White Lake, MI, daughter, Amy (Fred) Knoke, Decorah; grandchildren, John, Jane and Jaclyn Parvin and Joe, Tom and Jack Knoke; sister, Dora (Bob) Layton, Indialantic, FL; brother, Bob (Marilyn) Wildman, Cedar Falls; brothers-in-law, Will (Nancy) Rathert, Houston, TX and Walter Whittle, Elkader, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Verna Carlson; brother, Howard Wildman; nephew Robert Wildman; sister-in-law, Sally Whittle and brother-in-law, Jim Rathert.
