Gene B. Watson

Leonard Funeral Home, Elkader, IA was in charge of arrangements. Graveside Service were held at 10:30 a.m. on November 05, 2007 at Fontana Cemetery, rural Hazleton, IA.

Gene B. Watson was born on March 3, 1928, in Hazleton, Iowa, son of Oscar and Marjorie (King) Watson. He died on October 29, 2007, at his farm home outside Elkader, Iowa.

Gene's early life was spent in Hazleton and Independence and he graduated from Hazleton High School in 1945. He served in the U.S. Army from March of 1946 to August of 1947.

On June 11, 1950, Gene married Violet Tischhausr at Grace United Methodist church in Oelwein, Iowa. They were the parents of one son, Craig Gene Watson. Gene and Vi were married for fifty-four years.

Gene was employed with Rath Packing Company in Waterloo, after which he and Vi farmed near Hazleton and later outside of Winthrop. In 1964, they moved to the farm outside Elkader, when they farmed for over twenty years. After his retirement from farming, Gene was employed part time at Central State Bank in Elkader for many years.

Gene and Vi enjoyed snowmobiling, dancing, and card parties. As members of the Winnebago Wheels RV Club, they traveled throughout Iowa and Wisconsin. They especially enjoyed hosting the Winnebago Club annually at their farm.

For many years, Gene and Vi were delighted with the summertime visits of their twin grandchildren, Matthew and Kristin Watson.

Gene is survived by his son Craig (LeAnn) Watson of The Woodlands, Texas; grandson Matthew (Jennifer) Watson of Houston, Texas; granddaughter Kristin Watson of Houston, Texas; one sister, Coralie Becker of Cedar Falls, Iowa and sister-in-law Elda Watson, Waterloo, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Violet; his parents; sister Verla Schafbuch and brother Norbert Watson.

Memorials may be directed to the Central Community Hospital, Elkader, Iowa.
