Orville Berg

Funeral Services for Orville Berg were held Tuesday, June 15, 2004, at 10:30 A. M. in the East Clermont Lutheran Church. Gregg Kleppe presided along with the Reverend Gary Catterson. Burial was in the church cemetery. Special music was provided by organist Lois Dummermuth and soloist, Clarence Amundson. Casket Bearers were: Joel Berg, Jim Berg, Jason Rael, Mike Fitzgerald, Nathan Fitzgerald, Hunter Berg, Nicholas Rael. The Schutte Funeral and Cremation Service of Clermont was in charge of arrangements.

Orville Sverre Berg was born October 17, 1912, in Clayton County, near Gunder, Iowa, to Olaf Berg and Sarah Halverson Berg. He passed away Friday, June 11, 2004, in the Good Samaritan Center at West Union, Iowa, at the age of 91 years, 7 months, and 24 days.

Orville was baptized and confirmed in the East Clermont Lutheran Church. He attended the rural schools in the Elgin area. On June 1, 1939 Orville was married to Alma Mae Friederich in the Lutheran parsonage at Clermont. To this union two sons were born.

The family farmed in Clayton County from 1940 to 1966. Orville was a cream hauler for the Clermont Creamery for 13 years, and was employed at the Clermont Implement. He worked as a carpenter from 1966 until his retirement.

Orville was a member of the East Clermont Lutheran Church and served on the Church Council. He served on the Clermont City Council and as a member of the Rural Fire Board of Clermont.
Orville loved the outdoors and believed in reaping the fruits of nature. He enjoyed gathering wild grapes, berries, nuts, plums, etc. He often could be seen grooming lawns with his John Deere mower and fishing wherever and whenever he could. His friends at his daily coffee stops kept him up-to-date with the latest community happenings. His grandchildren and great grandchildren were especially dear to him.

He is survived by his wife, Alma, two sons, Roger D. (Carol) Berg, Clermont, Iowa and Marvin L. (Diane) Berg, Postville, Iowa; four grandchildren, Joel (Lyn) Berg, Jim (Tina) Berg, Kristin (Mike) Fitzgerald, Sara (Jason) Rael; 9 great grandchildren; Emily, Rachel, and Hunter Berg, Nicholas, Jordan, Alexis, and Sheala Rael; Natalie and Nathan Fitzgerald; a sister, Martha Sinclair, Fairhope, Alabama, a brother Arvey (Cecelia) Berg, Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Otto, who died in infancy, and two sisters, Cora Halverson and Hulda Hunsberger.
