John Scrogum Dies Friday;
Rites Sunday

John Milton Scrogum, son of Jacob and Charlotte Scrogum, was born at North McGregor May 11, 1882, and passed away at the McGregor hospital Friday morning February 18, 1943, after an illness of only a few weeks duration.

With his passing, one of the oldest established businesses here, the Scrogum Fish & Ice Co., will doubless pass into other hands, having been owned and operated by this family since 1866, when the Scrogum home was made, about a half mile north of Marquette.

For 69 years the Scrogum family have been the keepers of the government light No 764, post light on the island promontory just south of the mouth of Yellow River. This duty was performed by Mr Jacob Scrogum from the year 1874 when it was established until his son John took over, while a youth, and has faithfully kept the trust all of these years.

John was a friend to all, both old and young and many of the sick and shutins will miss his flower bouquet gifts throughout the summer, as well as the children, whose pleas for a "piece of ice" were never refused.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon from the Pilkington funeral parlors, Rev. Dwight Webster officiating, burial was made at Pleasant Grove Cemetery.

Casket bearers were Wm. Wingen, Charles Hinsch, Wm. Hellberg, Charles Vaughn, George Harrington, Everett Hagensick, Clate Dickens, and Truman Prouty.

Survivors are his brother Charles of McGregor, and sisters, Mrs. Emma Johnson, Mrs. Mike Grady, and Mrs. Kathryn Ross, all of Marquette, and six nieces and nephews, one nephew, John Robert Ross, now in service in the navy. A sister Agnes, and two brothers, Will and George, and an infant brother and sister and his parents, Jacob and Charlotte preceded him in death.

McGregor, Ia. - Funeral arrangements were completed here Saturday for John Scrogum, 61, last of the family to live at the famous Scrogum's Landing on the Mississippi River just north of McGregor, who died Friday at the McGregor Hospital following a month's illness.

The last rites will be held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Pilkington Funeral Home with the Rev. Dwight E. Webster, pastor of the Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Grove Cemetery.

Scrogum's Landing, where in early days steamboat and rafts tied up for supplies, was founded by John's father, Jacob Scrogum, 80 years ago. The family in 1867 shipped the first Upper Mississippi fish to New York, since which time they have marketed several hundred tons of fish in the East every year. They have tended the Yellow River light on the Mississippi since lights were put on the river in 1874. It had been John's job since childhood to take care of the light, visiting it by boat each morning and evening during the navigation season. He never married.

His mother died two years ago at the age of 97. She was a witness of the river tragedy when the steamboat 'James Malcolm' blew up in front of the Scrogum home, killing 16 of the crew. In John's possession was the pilot's field glass which was washed ashore.

Surviving are a brother, Charles of McGregor; and three sisters, Mrs. Michael Grady, Mrs. Emma Johnson, and Mrs. Katherine Ross, all of Marquette.
