Hazel Waters

A Funeral Mass for Hazel Waters was held Tuesday, April 3, 2007, at 10:00 a.m. in St. Bridget Catholic Church at Postville, Iowa. Father Richard Gaul was the Presider. Linda Bacon was the organist and song leader and Kim Schutte was the soloist. Sister Mary McCauley was the Lector and Communion Lay Minister. The Mass Servers were Jared Szabo and Zachary Szabo. The Casket Bearers were: Josh Bissell, Jerry Bissell, Brian Waters, Bob Wolf, Karl Sander, Darron Sander, and the Honorary Casket Bearers were: Dr. Robert Schneider, George Wander, James Farmer, Terry Hogan, Sylvan Torkelson, Henry Follett. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery. The Schutte Funeral and Cremation Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements.

Hazel Lorraine (Kneeskern) Waters was born December 25, 1910, in Winneshiek County, south of Frankville, Iowa, to William and Jennie (Roths) Kneeskern. She passed away Wednesday, March 28, 2007, in Veterans Memorial Hospital at Waukon, Iowa, at the age of 96 years, 3 months, and 3 days.

Hazel attended country school and graduated from Postville High School in 1928. She taught in the rural schools of Allamakee and Fayette counties.

On June 10, 1930 Hazel was married to Ambrose McKinley Waters in St. Peter's Catholic Church in Clermont, Iowa by Father Hehir. To this union two sons were born. They farmed for 50 years in Grand Meadow Township in Clayton County. In 1981 they moved to Postville. Hazel became a resident of the Good Samaritan Center in Postville on September 27, 2004.

She was a member of St. Bridget Catholic Church in Postville, treasurer of the Rosary Society and was also a member of the Prosperous Ridge Club. Hazel was a volunteer for over 20 years at the Good Samaritan Center, where she played the piano for their sing-along activities. She also gave piano lessons to the area children for many years. Hazel enjoyed playing the game of scrabble.

Preceding her in death are her parents, her husband, Ambrose, who died September 15, 1990, three brothers, Leo (Marie) Kneeskern, Donald Kneeskern and James Kneeskern, and a sister, Kathryn (Donald) Wisehart.

Surviving are her two sons, Edward (Marilyn) Waters, Overland Park, KS, and Richard (Connie) Waters, Louisburg, NC; seven grandchildren: Brian (Rhonda) Waters, Craig (Rose) Waters, Brenda (Mark) Stiles, Sharon (Robert) Wolfe, Darlene (Jerry) Bissell, Tommy (Jennie) Waters, and Paulette Thomas; 16 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.
