Hugo Kalke

Hugo Kalke, was born March 7, 1897, near Clayton Centre, Iowa, Read Township. He was the fifth child of thirteen children born to Fritz Kalke and his wife Anna, nee Mahnke.

He was baptized on August 1, 1897 by the Rev. F. W. Seifert, Zion Lutheran Church, Clayton Centre. He received his education at the rural county home school. After he had attained the proper age and completed the prescribed course of religious instruction he was confirmed in Zions Lutheran Church, Clayton Centre., by the Rev. Johannes Burkhard, on March 20, 1910.

In the year 1918 he was called to serve his county in the armed forces-Infantry Headquarters Company-19th Division. The last VFW.

On September 20, 1922, he was united in marriage to Esther Glawe to which two children were born. He started farming in Read Township and continued until the year of 1950 when he and his wife retired to their newly built home in Clayton Center. Only five years were enjoyed when his wife Esther died.

On October 21, 1957, he remarried to Catherine McAvoy, nee Buettner of Chicago, Illinois.

Mr. Kalke was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church at Clayton Center.

His entire life was spent on the farm in Read Township, Clayton Center, where his two children Edwin and Lillian were born and raised. He lived 30 years on the farm now occupied by his son Edwin. Here he started farming when a young man from February 1921 until he married in September 1922.

His wife Esther, one grandchild, Linda Lou, his mother and father, a sister Mrs. Eldo (Rena) Kamin, and two sisters who died in infancy preceded him in death. He had reached the age of 78 years, 3 months, 23 days.

He is survived by his wife Catherine, son Edwin, who lives on the home farm, and daughter, Mrs. Lillian Engler Voss, Garnavillo. There are seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild. In addition he leaves the following brothers and sisters, Alvin, New Richland, Minnesota, Milo, Nashua, Harley, Elkader, Henry, Rockford, Iowa, Mrs. Louis (Etta) Eberhardt, Elkader, Mrs. John (Nelda) Schuety, Elkader, Mrs. Clarence (Hulda) Baade, Elkader, Mrs. Marvin (Edna) Henning, Farmersburg, and Mrs. Elmer (Freda) Schuette, Guttenberg.

Pallbearers were Lorraine Kalke, Loyd Engler, Lester Engler, Lyle Voss, Gene Voss and Terry Ackley.
