Fred Kalke

Fred Kalke, who died last Thursday morning, April 21, was born in Lensing, in the province of Mecklenberg, Germany, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Kalke, nee Frieman. In 1887, he came to America, with his parents, who settled in the neighborhood of Clayton Centre on the former Fred Lembke farm. Fifty years ago, he was confirmed in Clayton Centre on April 1882, by the late Rev. F.W. Seifert.

His marriage to Miss Anna Mahnke occurred September 25, 1890, The young people then built up the home place where they resided for 41 years, rearing their children, to young manhood and womanhood---two children died in infancy. In 1931 they removed to their present home.

He endured much suffering, in his lifetime, submitting to five different operations in 25 years, the last one on Sunday, April 17, in vain, to save his life. Death came at the age of 63 years, eight months, and 24 days.

Those surviving to mourn his death are his widow, Mrs. Anna Kalke, the eleven children, Elta, wife of Louis Eberhardt, Garnavillo, Nelda, married to John Schuety, Osborne, Hugo, Elkader, Frieda, wife of Elmer Schutte, Guttenburg, Milo, Rudd, Rena wife of Eldo Kamin, Sioux City, Heinrich, Sheldahl, Edna wife of Marvin Henning, Farmersburg, Harley, on the home place near Elkader, Hulda, wife of Clarence Baade, Elkader, and Alvin, Rudd, his aged father, one sister, Mrs. Maria Fayn, Dubuque, and 21 grandchildren.

His admisrable qualities as a citizen, husband, and father will long be remembered and he was well loved and respected by all who knew him. He was a member of the Zion's Lutheran Church, Clayton Centre. The esteem in which he was held was shown by the large attendance at the funeral which was held Saturday, April 23, at 1:30 p.m. from the home and in the church at Clayton Centre. Interment was made in the new cemetery, the Rev. B. F. Korte officiating.
