Monona Woman Dies After Crash at National

Collision Sends Five to Hospital

Garnavillo----A Monona woman died and five other persons were seriously injured as a result of a two-car crash that occurred six miles north of Garnavillo about 8:15 p.m. Sunday, May 16.

Miss Ruby Staade, 50, Monona, died at the Central Community Hospital Sunday night from injuries received in the crash which took place on highway 52 in front of the Swiss Miss restaurant.

According to a report from authorities, the deceased woman was riding in a car driven by Roy Hoth, 52, and his wife. The Hoth car was making a left turn into the Swiss Miss parking lot and went into the path of a car driven by Glen Wright, 45, of Dodge Center, Minnesota.

Wright's wife, 41, and another passenger, Rollo Horsman, 45, Rochester, Minnesota along with Hoth and his wife were rushed to the Central Community Hospital for emergency treatment. Hoth, his wife, and the Wrights were considered to be in fair condition Tuesday evening. Horsman was the least injuried in the collision and was released from Central Community Hospital Tuesday afternoon.

All three Elkader doctors and all available nurses and technicians were called Sunday night to assist the victims of the crash. The emergency occurred when the hospital was already quite busy and all possible extra help was needed.

The point of the crash is located at the crest of a hill near the village of National and became the location of the third motor vehicle death in Clayton County for 1965.

Clayton County Sheriff Milton Klink assisted in the investigation of the fatal crash Sunday night.

Funeral Rites Held for Mrs. LeRoy Hoth

Funeral services for Mrs. LeRoy Hoth, 54, were held Thursday afternoon, June 10, at 2 p.m. at St. Paul Evangical Lutheran Church with Rev. R.E. Langholz officiating. The body lay in state at the church from 12:30 p.m. until the time of service. Burial was in the Clayton Centre new cemetery.

Mrs. Hoth died suddenly and unexpectedly Monday morning, June 7, at the Elkader hospital as a result of injuries she received in a car accident May 16 at National. Indications were that she was getting along very well and was a cheerful visitor with the many who called on her in the hospital.

Emma Amanda Stade Hoth was born February 16, 1911, at Dayton, the daughter of Charles and Evalena Whals Stade. She was baptized April 30, 1911, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Garnavillo by Rev. K. W. Braun. She was confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church in Farmersburg, May 10, 1925, by Rev. Peper. Mrs. Hoth attended the rural schools of Clayton County.

She was married to LeRoy Hoth June 14, 1933. After their marriage, they farmed for several years near St. Olaf, and then moved to Elkader where they lived for five years. They then returned to farming, living near Farmersburg and Marquette, before moving to the farm at the east edge of Monona in February 1943, where they resided at the time of Mrs. Hoth's death.

Mrs. Hoth was active in the women's work of her church, belonging to the Ladies Aid Society for many years and serving as chairman of the New Guinea Circle at the time of her death. She was also active in the Better Homemakers Project Club, and at a leader of 4-H work for girls.

Preceding her in death was her sister, Ruby Stade, who died at the same accident in which she was injured.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Keith (Roylene) Mohning, Garnavillo, a son Gary Arthur, Monona, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Stade, Farmersburg, and two grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Ronald Blumhagen, Terry Goltz, Oscar Erickson, Joseph Mista, Robert Kiesau, Alvin Engelhardt, Raymond Vangen and Eugene Baade.
