Leo James Christofferson, 77, of Monona, Iowa, died Monday, September 11, 2006, at the Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital following a courageous battle with cancer. He was born December 19, 1928, at Postville, to William and Alice (White) Christofferson. He was baptized April 17, 1938, and confirmed at Postville.
August 24, 1954, Leo was married to Ramona R. Bentien at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.
Leo attended Postville School and graduated in 1947, where he was Senior Class President and Homecoming King. He received the Iowa Farmers award from the FFA. He served in the United States Marines Corps at San Diego, Calif., from 1951 to 1953. Leo farmed near Frankville for two years and then moved to the Luana area. He worked for Marhofer in Postville for 18 months until it was sold to Hygrade and worked there for sixteen and a half years. He also worked for Lang's Dairy Equipment for six years and Beatrice Cheese Company of Fredericksburg for 13 years, until he retired May 1, 1996.
Leo was Mayor of Monona for seven and a half years, served on the Harpers Ferry City Council for six years, where he also served as Mayor for two years. Leo was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 722 of Harpers Ferry, where he was Vice Commander for one year, Brotherly Love Masonic Lodge of Postville, Scottish Rite Temple, 32 degree of Cedar Rapids, Lifetime member of the El Kahir Shrine Temple of Cedar Rapids, volunteer Fire Department for Monona and Harpers Ferry, Iowa Fireman's Association, and the Northeast Iowa Shrine Clowns. For years Leo was a cast member of the "Living Last Supper" playing James the Elder.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Ramona Christofferson of Monona; three children, Wm. "Bill" (Joyce) Christofferson of Postville, Melon (significant other Joe Hogan) Horns of Harpers Ferry, and Tim (Linda) Christofferson of Monona; one step-daughter, Linda (Eldon) Kurth of Monona; nine grandchildren; one step-granddaughter; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Marian Linderbaum of Castalia; one brother, Roger (Marilyn) Christofferson of Postville; two half-brothers, Dean (Mary) Christofferson of Arizona and Mark (Lonnie) Christofferson of Kansas; and two half-sisters, Myrna (Ron) Gordon of New Mexico and Ruth Walz or Arizona; and several nieces and nephews.
Leo was preceded in death by his parents; step-mother Lois; a son-in-law, Myron Horns; a brother-in-law, Charles Linderbaum; two sisters-in-law, Betty Funk and JoAnn Benesh; and maternal in-laws Linford and Thelma Bentien.
Funeral services were held Thursday, September 14, at the Living Faith United Methodist Parish, Monona. Rev. Dennis Gilbert officiated. A private family inurnment will take place at a later date. Leonard Funeral Home of Monona was in charge of arrangements.
Casketbearers were Mike Horns, Ryan Hogan, Matthew Horns, Seth Christofferson, Shaun Christofferson, Wade Christofferson, Keefe Williams, and Ivy Williams. Honorary casketbearers were the Northeast Iowa Shrine Clowns, Pat Cota, Clem Gerhartz, Gene Nevermann, and Jim Burger.
