JOHN REIDEL FUNERAL HELD

Funeral services for John G. Reidel, 89, were held last Thursday afternoon at 1:45 o'clock from the Charles Reidel home to Pilgrim Evangelical church at 2 o'clock with the Rev. Harvey W. Raduege officiating.

Burial was in the City Cemetery.

Mr. Reidel died at the home of his son, Charles, Monday morning, Feb. 18, at 10 o'clock from a heart ailment having been in poor health since last September.

He was born the son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Reidel, Sept. 1, 1856, in Linton township, Allamakee county. He was married to Mary Katherine Sautter, May 23, 1883.

His entire life of nearly 90 years was spent in this community. First he lived on the farm at Watson and later he bought the H.J. Reidel farm and lived there until 1921, when he moved to Monona and made his home with the Charles Reidel family who always cared for him well.

For many years he served the community as an auctioneer and had charge of many farm sales. He also served a number of years as adjustor for the Clayton County Fire Insurance company. While serving in these two capacities he made many acquaintances and had an opportunity to watch the community grow and to gather the stories of its history. In his older years he loved to tell the stories of how the community grew.

While living at Watson, he took an active interest in the Evangelical church that was there at that time and also in the old Stone church. He maintained his interest in the old Stone church by attending its annual reunions as long as he was able. After moving to Monona, he attended the Pilgrim Evangelical church as long as he could and when no longer able to attend, he followed the church service on the radio and continued with his regular reading of the Bible.

He was considered one of the oldest members of the I.O.O.F. being a member for 49 years. A.J. Thompson of Sheldon, formerly of Monona, is 91 years old, having beeen a member for 58 years, since March 22, 1887. E.B. Reed of Springfield, Ill. is 76 years old and joined April 15, 1893, when 24 years old.

His wife preceded him in death, March 8, 1920, as did a daughter, Mabel Waalk, July 11, 1928. Two brothers and one sister also preceded him in death. One grandson, Howard Reidel, died in 1936.

At the church service, David Schlitter sang "Rock of Ages" and "The Old Rugged Cross" Mrs. H.W. Raduege was the accompanist.

Members of the I.O.O.F. attended the church service in a body and conducted the committal service at the grave with H.H. Smith conducting the rites.

He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Lillian Pingle of Whittier, Calif.; two sons, Charles and John of Monona; one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Ulish of Monona; seven grandchildren, and nine great granchildren.

Pallbearers were: Dwight Newcomb, Chris Kohler, H.E. Pomeroy, Walter Jenkins, Harry Kuthe and Robert Waskow.

The following relatives from oout of town attended the funeral services: Ray Reidel, Miss Gae Reidel, and Mrs. Charles Stevens of Albion; Mrs. Stanley Veit of Mason City, Mrs. Albert Jermier, Mrs. Herman Hatzksy, Mrs. Ray Huxsol, and George Jermier of Charles City; Jake Sudol Sr., Jake Sudol Jrs. Mrs Peter Miller, Miss Anna Plozel, and Frank Jermier of Nashua; Mrs. Ida Zirbes and Glen, Mr. and Mrss. William Pilkington, Cliff Pilkington and Janis and Bruce, Mr. and Mrs. John Heilman and Mrs. Ed McAndrew of McGregor; Mr. and Mrs. Harvey L. Blue of Rockford, Ill.; Mr. and Mrs. Orlando Scheffert of Edgewood; Miss Mary Topel of Ottawa, Ill.
