OBITUARY

John Scheffert, of Giard Twp., died Jan. 4th, while waiting his turn in the Farmers State Bank, Monona. He had not been in good health, but his sudden death was a great shock.

Mr. John Scheffert was a German by birth, having been born in Prussia, Dimien, Germany, January 18, 1861. When he was a boy 14 years of age he came to America, locating in Clayton county. For 4 years he worked on a farm. Then he was in the employment of the Milwaukee Railroad Company for 3 years. On February 13th, 1882, he was united in matrimony to Miss Mary Verhota. They started life's journey together on a farm near Froelich. 19 years later they moved on Pleasant Ridge where they had their home for 22 years.

To this marriage were born 9 childen, of which two preceded him in death, having died in their infancy.

He is being survived by his bereaved wife and his children. Mrs. F. Holly, of Monona, Mrs. C. Oliver and Mrs. W. Timens of Dubuque, Mrs H. Blitz and Mrs. John Bonzer of Pleasant Ridge, (P.O. McGregor, Iowa), Mrs. R. Bohonek, of Monona, Mrs M. Suhrada, Of Prairie du Chien, as well as 3 brothers, August, Frank and Charles Scheffert, of Dubuque, and 16 grand children, as well as many other relatives and a host of friends.

Monona, Ia., Jan. 10 - John Scheffert died suddenly Monday in the Farmers' State bank here. He had come to Monona on a business trip with his son-in-law Hugo Blitz from his home on Pleasant Ridge, east of here.

Mr. John Scheffert was born in Dimien, Germany, January 18, 1862. When he was 14 years of age he came to America, and located in Clayton county. For four years he worked on a farm and for three years he was in the employment of the Milwaukee Railroad company.

After his marriage he lived on a farm for 10 years near Froelich. Later he moved on Pleasant Ridge, where he lived on a farm for 22 years.

He is survived by the widow and the following children: Mrs. F. Holly of Monona; Mrs. John Bonzer and Mrs. Hugo Blitz, on Pleasant Ridge; Mrs. Ray Bohonek, of Monona; Mrs. Timens of Dubuque; Mrs. Suhrata, of Prairie du Chien; Mrs. Oliver, of Dubuque; and three brothers, August, Frank and Charles Scheffert, of Dubuque.

The funeral was held yesterday with services at the Methodist church, with Rev. J.B. Ackman presiding. Interment in Monona cemetery.

~I completely forgot to record the source - I believe it was from a Dubuque or Elkader paper.

Note that the 2 obits differ to birth year.
