Elkader Register--April 8, 1926

The funeral of Mrs. Peter Berns (nee Clara Scheffert) of Garber, who passed away at the Lenth hospital at Elkader on the evening of March 27, was held at Garber on Tuesday morning of last week, services being conducted by Rev. Goetzinger at the Catholic church there. The body was laid to rest in the cemetery at Elkport. Deceased was a life long resident of Clayton county. About two weeks previous to her death she submitted to an operation. She was married to Mr. Peter Berns and for many years the couple lived on a farm in Volga township, but of late years have been residents of Garber. Mrs Berns was a kind and true wife, mother, sister, and friend, always ready with heart and hand to help those in need. To know her was to love her. Her death is deeply mourned by her husband, three daughters, Mrs. Joseph Thein of Garber; Mrs. Frank Kainz of near Elkader and Mrs. Leonard La Barre of St. Paul, Minn; two sons, Otto and Ben of Volga township; a number of grandchildren, one sister, Mrs T. Boots, three brothers, John Scheffert of Elkader, Ed Scheffert of Luana and Albert Scheffert of Missouri, and many other relatives and friends by whom this good and true Christian woman will be saddly missed. Mrs Berns was about 62 years old when thle Angel of Death called her to the other world, where there is no suffering, but happiness and joy forever. The funeral was largely attended by relatives and friends from far and near, which showed that the deceased was held in high esteem by all who knew her.
