..Cedar Rapids, IA Republican and Times 08APR1922(Also Dubuque IA Telegraph-Herald): “..Myron STONE who lives near Fox Cave five miles north of Edgewood (IA) quarried a petrified human body from the cave one day last week. It was embedded in one of the rocky galleries of the cave, but for some reason or other the head was missing. Presumably it was not submerged with the rest of the body and exposed to the air caused it to decay. Scientists are of the opinion that petrification takes about 50,000 years, so that this body must have been imbedded in the mud and water of Clayton County more than 45,000 years before the pyramids of Egypt were constructed … This cave … deep and dark with winding passages. At one end of it is a spring of good water and at the end of another is a natural well which is about ten feet in diameter and fifty feet deep …”

Spirit Lake IA Beacon 04MAY1922: “Myron STONE owns a curiousity in the shape of a petrified human body which he quarried from the Fox Cave .. the relic of prehistoric ages was imbedded face downward in one of the rocky galleries of the cave. The head is missing .. the feet were broken off to remove the body from its rocky bed. The front half of the body was also destroyed by (being) thoroughly embedded and attached to the native rock. Where it is cut away from the embedded half the outlines of bones and some of the internal organs can plainly be seen. The outline of the spinal column, and the convolutions of the muscles are as natural as life …”
