On the 31st ult. John Corlett and wife of Elkader, celebrated their golden wedding. They were married in New York state in 1851, came to Clayton county in 1856 and for forty years have spent their lives on the Corlett farm near Garnavillo, Clayton county. Such events ought to be celebrated everywhere.

Golden Wedding Celebrated
On Friday May 31st occurred the fiftieth wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. John E. Corlett, of this place, which was celebrated by seven of their children, Frank and Cyrus, of Farmersburg; Horace, of Ames; Mrs. Amy Hamilton, of Nora Springs; Mrs. Nettie Lange, of Rolfe; James and Roy, of Elkader; a number of their grandchildren and daughters-in-law, a few old neighbors and friends.

Two of the children, Will, of Texas and Mrs. Ella Hallett, of Sterling, Ill., were unable to be present, so the family reunion was not quite complete. It was a happy occasion and one that had long been looked forward to by Mrs. Corlett, it seemed her great desire to live to celebrate her golden wedding and they were all thankful that her hope was realized.

Mr. Corlett was presented with an elaborate, gold-headed cane, being the gift of his children. The couple also received twenty-five dollars in gold, three gold spoons, a gold thimble, a gold olive fork, a dozen china fruit plates, china jelly dish and spoon tray, an olive dish, a tabourette and center piece.

Among the few guests present was one who six years ago celebrated a similar occasion and an aged couple who next year will have passed fifty years of married life together, this is quite an unusual meeting, as but few are permitted this blessing, and fewer and fewer there are each year.

In the evening they were surprised and very much elated to find they were being serenaded by the band, a pleasure which will ever after have a warm spot in "Uncle" John's heart.

Mr. and Mrs. Corlett were married in [New] York state in 1851, and in 1856 moved to Clayton county where they have lived ever since; forty years of their lives having been spent on what is known as "The Corlett Farm," near Farmersburg. The friends of Mr. and Mrs. Corlett all join in wishing them years of health and happiness yet to come.
