Geo. Benker & wife skip town, 1881

Elkader Register, Fri., 18 Mar. 1881. Clayton Chips column.

Mr. Geo. Benker and wife, an old couple who for several years have lived about 1 mile north of town, have suddenly disappeared. No one knows when they left or where they have gone to. As an explanation of their mysterious leave taking, it is stated that all their property was mortgaged, and that he has been selling it off on the sly. He also owed several bills in town.
