On Sunday the 22nd ult., Mr. Thomas Geraghty, and a load of friends had a narrow escape from drowning.
On the date mentioned Mr. Geraghty, accompanied by Misses Nellie Connell and Miss Mary Uriell, and Messrs. Edward Barrett and John Ready, were returning home from Garnavillo, and in attempting to ford Cedar Creek, which was very high, the buggy was overturned, and but for the fact that Chris Bauer, who witnessed the accident and came to their rescue, all would have been drowned. It was a very narrow escape, and their thanks are due to Mr. Bauer for his noble work in their behalf.
The humorous side to the story remains to be told. When rescued all were insensible and while they were being restored to consciousness, the team was left to care for itself, and fortunately landed safely on an island. On coming to, Mr. Geraghty missed his team, and forgetting the presence of the ladies in his anxiety to save the horses, stripped and swam to the island, and brought the team safely to land. It is said that Thomas blushes to the roots of his hair when his swim is mentioned. Ask him and see.
