Gill Church's Store - 80 Years in McGregor
The name of "Church" connected with a McGregor business firm for nearly 80 years, passed out of existence this week when the Robert Hills took possession of the confectionery store they recently purchased from Mrs. Elizabeth Church. The business was established shortly after the Civil war by Gilbert Church, a young Civil War soldier, and his wife, Sarah Wynne Church. After the death of her husband in 1881, Mrs. Church kept on with the store until her son, Gill, took over the management.
The store then became known as "Gill's" as well as "Church's," and Gill Church continued with the business until his death in 1930. Since then his widow, Mrs. Elizabeth Church, who had assisted in the store since the time of her marriage in 1904, has operated the store.
