"From Clayton County Courthouse records we learn of his second marriage on Nov. 6, 1892 to an older widow of 55. We speculate that the second marriage was probably, at least initially, one of convenience in order to have someone to care for his young children. It is interesting that his second wife, Mina (or Musa; maiden name, Conrad) was also of German heritage and the widow of a David Bertschinger. We find no record of her death, but she is not shown in the Jacob Zahn household in the 1895 census. As an older woman, could she have died giving birth?"
The answer to his question about her death possibly comes from the following Notice posted in the McGregor News:
Notice: My wife, Wilhelmina Zahn, having left my home without my consent, all persons are hereby notified not to trust her on my account as I will pay no bills of her contracting, and will not be liable for her support except at my home where she is welcome to return at any time. August 21, 1893 ...... Jacob Zahn
~McGregor News, Wednesday, August 23, 1893; pg 3 (repeated Aug 30I was unable to find anything about Wilhelmina 'Mina' after that notice was published.
