THEODORE GLAWE
(By Judy Bender Moyna)Theodore William Glawe was born 30 Jan. 1891 in Read Twp., the son of Theodore William Elise (Taake) Glawe. His first wife, Emma Lembke, the daughter of Henry Lembke, died in 1918 following the birth of their only child, Vernon.
Vernon married Hazel Berger, the daughter of Ben and Stella (Herman) Berger on the 14 October 1939. They are the parents of four children, Stanley Vernon, b. 14 Nov. 1940; Graham who died in infancy; Christine Lou (Mrs. Kevin Krambeer) b. 22 Jan 1974; and Cindy Sue b. 7 Nov 1959.
Theodore (Ted) was married to Lillian Anna Vogt Oelke, the daughter of Frederick W. and Amelia (Seifert, Vullgraf) Vogt, on 16 May 1934 at Decorah. Lillian was a graduate of Matthew’s Hair Dressing Academy (1931) and operated her own shop in Farmersburg. After their marriage, they started farming in Farmersburg Twp. on his farm, retiring in 1945 and moving to Elkader. For a number of years Ted served as the caretaker of the cemetery at the Zion Lutheran Church in Clayton Center, worked for Binks Mercantile Store, and helped many of his old friends during haying season.
His face was known all over Elkader as he "supervised" the many construction projects going on around the town. He is remembered by friends and relatives as one who was always willing to help the other fellow but never asked anything in return. He was loved by young and old alike. His special favorites were children, whether they were his nieces, nephews, or grandchildren. He played a special role in the young lives of his step-grandchildren, Judy Bender Moyna, Lois Ann Bink Wood, and Rose Katherine Bink Nesteby Dillon.
