FREDERICK H. VOGT AND SOPHIE KOTTLEMAN

Sophie Kottleman, who was born in Germany 7 Aug. 1823, was married at New Orleans to Frederick H. Vogt. They came together to Clayton County in 1853 according to the Iowa Census of 1856 and the obituary of Sophie Vogt. (The 1843 in the obituary is probably incorrect.) They settled in Read Twp. where their children were born: Henrich C. (Henry) b. 18 May 1853; Frederick W. (Fred) b. 15 Jan. 1856; Johann Fritz (John) b. 26 Mar 1858; Conrad William b. about 1 Jan. 1861, d. 8 June 1863, buried. Clayton Center; Sophie Cor. b. 29 April 1863; and Elizabeth W. M. (Elsie) b. 8 Apr 1866.

Frederick H. Vogt, who farmed in Read Twp., was born 5 Sept. 1819 in Krechspial Sturm, Germany and died 29 April 1900 in Read Township of old age. His wife preceded him in death 4 July 1898. Both are buried in the Clayton Center cemetery .

~The information was collected by Judy and Jerry Moyna, from family members, especially Lillian (Vogt) Oelke Glawe, Marinette (Oelke) Bender Bink Olson, Arma Jean Newbern, Elkader, Rueben Muellers, St. Olaf, Floyd and Ora Schroeder, Guttenberg, Iowa, several histories of Clayton County including 1882 and 1912 and 1984, from various Iowa and Federal census records, several newspapers from the county including the Clayton County Journal, The Elkader Register, and the Clayton County Register, etc.

Plans include scanning available photographs, post cards, plat maps, and other appropriate printed material and the continuation of the excerpts from the local newspapers. A print out of the descendants of the Vogts is already on computer. Copies on a computer disk of the Family Tree Maker information and the text shown here are available to anyone who wants to add information to that now on file. Also, any additions and corrections, text or pictures, or contributions are more than welcome. Facilities exist to copy and return photographs. Contact Judy via her email address.
