COOLEY, Edwin Gilbert, educator; born at Strawberry Point, Ia., Mar. 12, 1857; son Gilbert and Martha Cooley; student State Univ. of Ia.; Ph.B., Univ. of Chicago, 1895; life diploma as teacher in Ia. 1889; LL.D., Univ. of Illinois, 1905; married Lydia A. Stanley, of Strawberry Point, Ia., Jan. 1, 1878; children: Bertha, Susie, Dean, Bessie, Gilbert, Edwin. Began teaching in Ia., 1879; supt. schs., Cresco. Ia., 1885-91, Aurora, Illinois, 1891-3; prin. high sch., LaGrange, Ill., 1893-1900; supt. schs., Chicago, 1900-9: pres. D.C. Heath & Co., Boston, Mar. 1, 1909-10; investigating ednl. methods and institutions. In Europe for Chicago Assn. of Commerce, 1910-11. Decorated Order Franz Josef (Austria), 1905. Pres. Illinois State Teachers' Assn., 1904; pres. N.E.A., 1907-8 (pres. dept. superintendence, 1904). Clubs: Union League, Chicago Athletic, University (Chicago), University (Boston). Residence: Chicago.
