John and Alise Meier Hoth
John Hoth b. in Germany on October 22, 1860. His parents were Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hoth.
In 1867 they made the big move of coming by boat to the U. S. A. at this time they settled in Read Twp., Clayton Co., Iowa.
On April 14, 1882, he married Alise Sophia Meier at Zion Lutheran Church, Clayton Centre, Iowa. Alise was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Meier, b. November 30, 1861, in Garnavillo Twp. At the age of two weeks she was baptized at Ceres Lutheran Church, Garnavillo Twp., by Rev. Stuckfeld.
She was confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church, March 21, 1875, by Rev. F. W. Seifert, where she and John were both lifetime members.
Sophia lived with her parents on a farm between Froelich and Farmersburg until her marriage to John when they settled on the homestead in Boardman Twp. They were blessed with ten children, Tena married Henry Glawe, Ella married Albert Breitsprecker, Arthur, Sophia who passed away at age seven, Hilma who never married and devoted many years of caring for her parents, Mahala married Henry Radloff, Emil, Edwin, Elmer, and Willis.
John and Alise lived on the farm for 42 years. On July 28, 1924, they moved to Elkader in the house on 106 S. 2nd Street, where they resided until death.
John passed away July 16, 1948, at age 88, and was laid to rest July 18, at the old Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery, with Rev. J. H. Zerhusen officiating at the service. Alise lived to be 96, she passed away June 1, 1958, funeral on June 4, at Zion Lutheran Church with burial in the old church cemetery.
It is good to report that both the farm and the home have stayed in the Hoth family and are both owned by Duane and his wife Joann. Duane is the son of Edwin.
