Funeral services for George Raymond Engebretson, 80, Rembrandt, were held Friday, May 14 at 10:30 a.m. at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Rembrandt with Pastor Rick Senner officiating.
He passed away Tuesday , May 11, in Storm Lake. The Sliefert Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Burial was in Barnes Township Cemetery in Linn Grove with military rites by Graeber-Rowe American Legion Post #394 from Sioux Rapids.
Pallbearers were John Binder, Tom Cavanaugh, Randy McKibben, Don Boeucher, Doug McCormick and Rich Obman
Honorary Pallbearers were Ossie Anderson, Ronald Haraldson, Emmett Peterson, Gilbert Bentley, Glenn Odor, Lewis Siekman, and Rich Siefken.
George Raymond Engebretson was born on July 10, 1912 in Douglas Township near Linn Grove, the son of Axel and Torbjor (Haroldson) Engebretson. He grew up on the farm near Linn Grove and attended high school in Linn Grove.
On July 3 , 1936, he was united in marriage to Constance Duane Doyle at Elk Point, South Dakota. To this union; four children were born: Alan, Sandra, George , and Doyle.
George was a friendly and outgoing individual, very active in sports and community services.
While in college, he participated in football an d basketball . At Morningside, he was a "M" Club member.
George was drafted into the U.S. Army during WW II and left behind his wife, two small children and his family business. While serving as an infantryman, he was seriously wounded during fierce combat at Saint Louis, France. After a lengthy convalescence throughout military hospitals in England, he returned home.
During George's years as owner of "George's Place" he was a very active promoter of the Rembrandt Community. He served on the Fire Department (with a stint as chief). City Council and helped operate the Community Theater. Memberships include Disabled American Veterans, American Legion (Past Commander) and Elks Club.
George had a passion for the sport of baseball and organize many teams in the Rembrandt Community. He started this in the late 1940's and continued into the 1970's. His interest in the sport helped many young men develop into good athletic competitors and taught them the value of true sportsmanship . He served on the board of the N.W. Iowa Sportsman's Baseball League for many years. "George Engebretson Field" was named for him in the 1980's. George will be missed by a multitude of family an d friends, having touched them all in his own special way.
He is preceded in death by his parents, daughter Sandra , sister. Martha and wife, Duane.
He is survived by three sons: Alan of Storm Lake , George of Marcus and Doyle of Rembrandt: three brothers: Arthur of Storm Lake, Everett of Webster City and Herman of Linn Grove: seven grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren
