Funeral services for Joseph Whalen, 47, of Dickens, who died a week ago Tuesday of pneumonia and complications, were held last Thursday at 2 p. m. at the M. E. church in Dickens. Rev. C.H. Moore, pastor, officiated.
Casket bearers were L.A. Carter, D.E. Trent, George Williams, Ray Droll, Jack Miller and W.K. Molumby
Joseph Whalen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Will Whalen was born November 16, 1889, at Schaller, Iowa. He lived there until young manhood, coming to Dickens in 1914.
In 1915 he was united in marriage to Miss Maggie Reeverts of Dickens. They began their married life on a farm near Worthington, Minn.
Mr. Whalen was a member of the Evangelical church of Worthington and later had his membership transferred to the Methodist church of Dickens. After farming tor 15 years in the vicinity of Worthington. they moved back to Dickens where they have resided the past seven years until his untimely death.
At his death he was 48 years, 3 months, and 23 days of age.
He leaves to mourn his death. his wife, Mrs. Maggie Whalen; son, Joe, Jr., 20, member of the CCC camp at Oakville; daughters, Jennie, 18, Alma, 16, Florence, 15, Bertha, 13, Mae, 11, and Melvin, 6, all at home; three sisters, Mrs. Lawrence Prentice of Gillett Grove, Mrs. Mayme Ellis of Worthington, Minn., and Mrs. James Woolridge of Ida Grove; besides a host of kind and loving father a devoted husband. His passing is greatly mourned in the Dickens Community
