Victor S. Tillinghast was born to Sam and Jennie Tillinghast on April 7, 1884 in Clay County, Iowa. He lived to young manhood in the Peterson vicinity and received his education in Peterson and Spencer. In 1905 he was married to Carrie M. Madsen and lived north of Peterson for three and one half years, then moved to Wisconsin Township, Brookings County, South Dakota, where they have since resided. He joined the Congregational church in early manhood and remained a member of the Masonic and O. E. S. orders. Besides his wife he leaves his aged mother, Mrs. Jennie Tillinghast and sister, Mrs. Carl Walrath, three nephews and one niece, besides other relatives and many friends.
His father and two brothers preceded him in death. He passed away on July 26, 1947 and funeral services were conducted in the Methodist church in Arlington, on Monday, July 28 at 10 a.m. The remains were then brought to Peterson and interment was in the Oakland cemetery at 7 p.m. Rev. Frieboss conducted the ceremonies at the grave.
Pallbearers were James Johnson, Kenneth Murphy, Everett Jensen, Ray Wilbur, Clarence Webster and Warner Walrath.
